Middle School

Respect in middle school is often difficult to assess for children this age; this is a time of testing limits, raging hormones and mood swings. However, recent zero tolerance policies make being in touch with your child's school and knowing their policy regarding harassment, and intimidation essential. These policies will likely match your own family rules however, it is important to have a talk with middle school age kids to let them know that as they age, the rules regarding certain behavior change becoming less lenient. Letting them know the school rules about sexual harassment and physical intimidation can be useful for them.

You can deal directly with negative reports by being clear on what is wrong with taunting and or harassing others. Discuss what your family consequences are for such behavior. If your child begins talking in language that you find offensive or engages in behavior that worries you, act quickly by having a talk noting the changes you have observed. Sometimes letting off-handed remarks go unnoticed could be interpreted by your child as your not caring about them. You can talk with them about language you find offensive and inappropriate. Values are shaped early. By showing concern regarding their behavior and setting limits you help to mold their character and ensure that your child's values are ones that you support.

Values are shaped early. Make sure your child's values are ones that you support.
