Middle School is a time when some kids start experimenting with sexual activity.
Your child may see kids kissing at school and peer pressure will begin to
build. Beyond the biological facts about sex (the "birds and bees"),
it is important that they understand that sexual relationships involve caring,
concern and responsibility. By discussing both the physical and emotional
aspects of relationships, your child will be better informed to make decisions
later on. For pre-teens, including messages about the responsibilities and
consequences of sexual activity is important. Conversations with 11 and
12-year-olds, for example, should include talks about pregnancy, sexually
transmitted diseases (including HIV/AIDS), and how people can take steps
to protect themselves.
