Your child enters a new world when entering school for the first time. Even
kids who are used to being with other kids from a very young age are limited
by their lack of verbal skills, and the best behaved two year old has been
known to push a playmate out of frustration. As kid's language skills improve
they tend to hit their playmates less often. Preschool and kindergarten
is the time to set boundaries and talk about not hitting and pushing others.
Preschool and
kindergarten can also be a good time to teach children about "pretend"
and "real" fighting. You can look for opportunities to point out
to your child what is dangerous and what is not. Just as you tell a child
to avoid a stove because it can burn them, you can tell them that real guns
and real knives are dangerous because they can hurt them.
When it comes
to learning how to act, children often follow their parents' lead. You can
start early in helping to shape your child's views about what is appropriate
by thinking about how you handle stress in your relationships. Do you use
violence or anger to settle arguments? When you're angry, do you yell or
use physical force? If you want your child to avoid violence, be a good
role model for him or her.
