As your children enter middle school, you can expect some challenging of
family rules. Sometimes it can feel like your preteen is constantly pushing
the limits. Feeling clear about your family's values will help you remain
firm in the face of common complaints like "everybody else does it".
In middle school,
older more physically mature kids may, at times, take advantage of the younger
smaller kids. It may help to keep this in mind as your child transitions
to middle school. You can talk with your children about bullying or teasing
they may face at school or in their neighborhood. When you do, remember
to explain what you mean by "self-defense", and talk about other
kinds of harassment, like dating violence.
