Kids want to help
make a better world in lots of different ways-by protecting the environment,
helping the homeless, caring for animals, and visiting the sick. They
have the drive and commitment to make a difference. All they need
is a little help getting started. That's where Nickelodeon's The Big
Help comes in. The Big Help is an ongoing grassroots campaign created
by Nickelodeon to connect kids to their communities through volunteering.
Televised public service announcements and Big Help-A-Thons encourage
kids to pledge hours towards volunteering in their communities. Since
The Big Help's inception in 1994, 35 million kids have pledged over
400 million volunteer hours. We can't think of more convincing evidence
that kids care about their environment and are committed to getting
involved in a big way!
Big
Help Projects
The Big
Help takes on a wide variety of projects that range in size and scope.
1999's New York Citywide Event tackled six park makeovers in one day!
(Mariah Carey even joined us, proving that everyone can make their
mark and help a park.) Smaller in scale, but just as important, were
our Big Help projects in Macon, Georgia, where kids helped build a
garden for Alzheimer's patients, and in Eau Claire, Wisconsin where
we built an Arboretum. Big Helpers have saved the Blanding turtles
in Detroit, Michigan and created a schoolyard habitat in Charlotte,
North Carolina.
