"Rugrats" Chat with Mark Valenti Nick Yapper: Hey guys, we're waiting for Mark Valenti, our very own "Rugrats" expert! MODERATOR: Send in YOUR questions now, for Mark Valenti! Nick Yapper: Hey Moderator, who's your favorite Rugrat? MODERATOR: Good question Yapper! I would have to say Chuckie! Nick Yapper: How come? MODERATOR: I like his cute voice and red hair :) Who's your favorite Rugrat, Yapper? Nick Yapper: Oh, let me think.. Nick Yapper: Tommy, he's so brave and adventurous! MODERATOR: He really is! Nick Yapper: OK, guys... Nick Yapper: Mark Valenti is coming to the room!!!! Nick Yapper: Here he comes!!! MODERATOR: YAYAYAYA!!! Send those questions! Nick Yapper: I can see him down the hall!! Nick Yapper: He's here!!!! Rugrats: Greetings to "Rugrats" fans everywhere! Nick Yapper: Hiya Mark MODERATOR: Hi Mark, welcome!! Say hello to our guests! MODERATOR: Mark, our first question for you tonight... MODERATOR: Tell us "what you do." Nick Yapper: I know, I'm wondering that myself. Rugrats: Well, I have a lot of fun working with the "Rugrats" writing team helping to tell the funniest, best strories. Rugrats: We spend a lot of time discussing what characters will do, the kind of adventures the Rugrats will have—it's a long process but it's a lot of fun! MODERATOR: We're glad you do!! They sure are funny! MODERATOR: Next question is from Top top:How hard is it to make a "Rugrats" show? Nick Yapper: Good question, Top! Rugrats: Hi Top! It's a lot of hard work making a cartoon show. Rugrats: There are lots of steps in the process. Rugrats: First they have to be written... Rugrats: Then they have to be recorded... Rugrats: And then the director comes in with the artist and they design the characters and backgrounds. Rugrats: Then a process called storyboarding begins—that's where they draw up to 300 pages of pictures for each "Rugrats" cartoon. Rugrats: Most artists draw about 10 storyboard pages a day... Rugrats: So we rely on a lot of talented people to bring these characters to life. Nick Yapper: Wow, this all sounds like so much fun, but HARD!! Rugrats: After the storyboards are done they are run into a computer scanner and we make something called an Animatic—it's like a very rough version of a cartoon. Rugrats: Once that's finished we know if we have what will eventually become a good episode... Rugrats: And then the rest of the animation process kicks in! MODERATOR: Cookieies has the question we all want to know... cookieies:Who is your favorite character? Rugrats: (laughs) Cookieies, I'm going to guess that your favorite character is Angelica—am I right? Rugrats: My favorite character is probably Tommy, because he's such a hero... Nick Yapper: Mine too!!!! Rugrats: But I like all of the characters because they all have different personalities. Nick Yapper: - If you're joining us late, welcome to the Blab-a-torium! Tis one is from mandapie... mandapie:When you were little did you want to end up doing what you do now? Rugrats: Yes! Rugrats: When I was a kid I loved movies and TV and I didn't care what I did—I just wanted to be part of it. Rugrats: So it's like a dream come true. MODERATOR: Shyla19 wants to know... shyla19:Have you ever messed up on an episode and had to do it again? Rugrats: Every time! Rugrats: Animation is very difficult... Rugrats: So usually something has to go back to the drawing board... Rugrats: Whether it's voices, pictures—sometimes the color doesn't match—sometimes the show runs too long and we have to trim. Rugrats: We stay on our toes—24 hours a day! MODERATOR: Now here's an interesting question that's on alot of people's minds. Samlu asks... Nick Yapper: These are really great questions folks, keep 'em coming! samlu:What happens when the Rugrats grow up? Nick Yapper: Will they ever grow up? Rugrats: Well, eventually little babies do grow up—but we hope that the Rugrats stay young for a really long time! MODERATOR: Gamefreak asks... gamefreak1:Do you ever find that you can relate to one of the Rugrats characters? Rugrats: Gamefreak—good question! Rugrats: Sometimes I feel like Chucky if I'm not sure about what to do... Rugrats: Sometimes I feel like Phil when I feel messy... Rugrats: And sometimes when I'm crabby I feel just like Angelica. Rugrats: There are people who only draw the characters' mouths, there are people who only check for the right color... Rugrats: Some artists only draw backgrounds. Rugrats: But I also loved Charlie Brown. Rugrats: I wish "Rugrats" was around when I was a kid! Just imagine the wide variety of creatures available to them when they move beyond their backyard! Rugrats: But when we decided to make a big screen movie it seemed like a really cool way to introduce Baby Dil to the world. Rugrats: The creators of the show, Arlene Klasky and Gabor Csupo and Paul Germain, created the show in 1991 and named it for their own Rugrats!
