Words to Know: Helpful Definitions for Important Conversations

Your identity is all the things that make you who you are. For example, your race, ethnicity, gender, age, personality, hobbies, and more.

Your culture is made up of the meaningful, everyday things you learn and share with your family and friends. This includes things like food, languages, art, music, games, holiday celebrations, traditions, and more!

Your heritage is the traditions, stories, beliefs, and objects passed down to you from your relatives and ancestors.

Race is an idea made up by humans as a way to group people together. Race is usually based on things like a person’s skin color, hair texture, or other physical features. It is important to know that race isn’t based in science.

Your ethnicity is a group of people that you may belong to and share things with like culture, family history, language, country, or religion.

A community is a group of people that share similar interests, experiences, and ways of thinking. You probably belong to many communities related to your culture, your religion, your school, or your neighborhood.

Intersectionality is the way that all of the puzzle pieces of your identity fit together to build your whole life! It’s important to remember that everyone’s identity is unique, and everyone has unique life experiences!
